Dr. Lorie A. Vanchena is an Associate Professor and Director of the Max Kade Center for German American Studies at the University of Kansas, within the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Department of Slavic, German, and Eurasian Studies. Her research focuses on German immigrant culture in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the creation of a scholarly digital archive of poems written by German Americans during World War I and the study of the Turner movement in Lawrence, KS.
Her research interests span German-American cultural transfer, immigrant identity formation during wartime, and historical German-American literature. She teaches courses on the German-American experience, German-language literature, and contemporary German-speaking Europe, including online courses for the BGS degree completion program.
