Lori Watson is a Professor of Chemistry at Earlham College, specializing in synthetic and computational organometallic chemistry with a focus on inorganic education. She leads the $750,000 NSF-funded Earlham Science Scholar program, providing career planning and scholarships for STEM students. Watson co-founded the Interactive Online Network of Inorganic Chemists (IONiC), developing VIPEr, an online resource for inorganic chemistry education. Her research explores ligand design for cleaner energy catalysts and Ln/Ac separation chemistry.
- Education: Ph.D., Indiana University; M.T.S., St. Meinrad School of Theology; B.S., University of Kentucky
Research interests include organometallic catalysts for C-X bond activation, Ln/Ac separation, and advancing inorganic chemistry pedagogy through collaborative digital platforms. She has secured over $1.8M in grants, including an NSF award for inorganic curriculum development. Watson advises the Questing Catholics group and teaches courses in inorganic/physical chemistry and the Earlham Honors Program.
Her 15+ years of student-faculty research collaborations focus on computational studies of ligand effects in catalytic cycles and novel synthetic methodologies. Watson’s work bridges academia and community through initiatives like the Earlham Science Scholar program, which provides mentorship and research opportunities for underrepresented STEM students.
