Lori Watson is a Professor of Chemistry at Earlham College, specializing in synthetic and computational organometallic chemistry with a focus on catalytic cycles and cleaner energy research. She is also deeply involved in chemical education innovation, co-founding the Interactive Online Network of Inorganic Chemists (IONiC) to enhance teaching practices. Her research emphasizes C-H bond activation using platinum-group metals and ligand design to improve catalytic efficiency.
Educated at the University of Kentucky (B.S.), Indiana University (Ph.D.), and St. Meinrad School of Theology (M.T.S.), Watson integrates faith, science, and pedagogy through courses like the Earlham Seminar on Chemistry of Cooking and advising Questing Catholics. She leads a $750,000 NSF grant for STEM career development and collaborates on a $1.1M NSF project to improve inorganic chemistry curricula.
Her work bridges academic rigor and community-building, exemplified by the Earlham Science Scholar program, which provides scholarships and research opportunities for underrepresented students. Watson’s hobbies include basket weaving, gardening, and exploring Appalachia’s trails, reflecting her commitment to holistic learning and environmental stewardship.
