Lori Thorlakson is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Political Science in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Alberta. She previously served as a lecturer at the University of Nottingham and a Jean Monnet fellow at the European University Institute. At the University of Alberta, she was the founding director of the European Union Centre of Excellence (2013-2016) and directs the Faculty's School in Cortona, Italy.
Her educational background includes:
- BA (Hons) from Queen's University
- MSc from the London School of Economics
- PhD from the London School of Economics
Dr. Thorlakson's research centers on political parties, multi-level systems, energy transition, democracy, and the European Union. She investigates party competition, representation, and voter behaviour in federations and the EU, as well as the EU's impact on democratic development in post-communist states and the evolution of the European Parliament.
Her scientific awards include:
- Jean Monnet fellow at the European University Institute in Florence
- Jean Monnet Chair at the University of Alberta
Dr. Thorlakson is co-Principal Investigator for the Future Energy Systems project "Political Pathways of Energy Transition" and leads an NSERC-funded project on electricity grid transformation. She supervises graduate students in energy transition and comparative politics, using qualitative or quantitative methods in multilevel contexts.
She founded the European Union Centre of Excellence (2013-2016) and directs the Faculty's School in Cortona, Italy. Her current projects involve collaborations with the University of Calgary and funding from Future Energy Systems and NSERC.
