Lori Bales is a Professor in the School of Theatre & Dance at Millikin University. She holds a BA from Miami University (Ohio) and an MFA in Directing from Florida State University. Her expertise includes directing, musical theatre development, and play analysis. She founded the New Musicals Workshop at Millikin, collaborating with institutions like Theatre Building Chicago and the National Alliance for New Musicals (NAMT). Her work has been supported by grants from the National Fund for New Musicals.

Research interests focus on new musical development and theatre pedagogy. Key projects include directing String (premiere) and workshops for Bastard Jones, The Grid, and Golden Gate. Awards include the Weston Playhouse and Richard Rogers prizes.

Lori has directed over 30 productions at Millikin, including Spring Awakening and Into the Woods. Her international experience includes teaching in Italy and participating in NYC’s Lincoln Center Director’s Lab.
