Dr. Lorenza Bennardo is an Assistant Professor in Classical Civilization at the University of Toronto's Historical Studies department, joining in 2017. Her research centers on Latin poetry of the 1st century C.E., particularly the works of Statius under the Flavian emperors, and explores how scholarly debates influenced poetic creation. She co-leads the research network Overlooked: Expressions of Poverty and Marginality in the Ancient World and contributes to the SSHRC-funded Practices of Commentary project. Dr. Bennardo also coordinates a virtual Flavian reading group spanning Canada, Italy, and the U.S.
- Education: PhD in Classics (Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa), Laurea in Lettere Classiche (Università di Pisa).
Her scholarly output focuses on Graeco-Roman commentary traditions, enargeia in Statius' Thebaid, and digital Latin pedagogy. Notably, she investigates how color terminology enhances vividness in ekphrastic passages and how Roman philosophical language challenges Epicurean ideas in Statius' underworld depictions.
Dr. Bennardo's teaching spans introductory to advanced Latin courses, Roman history, and literature in translation. She advocates for spoken Latin and Second Language Acquisition methods to modernize classical language instruction.
