Lorena Arocha is an Assistant Professor in the Social Sciences Department at Northumbria University, specializing in critical slavery studies, migration, and gender. She examines the intersections of policy and practice related to modern slavery, human trafficking, and labour exploitation across global contexts.
Her research has explored anti-trafficking efforts in South Asia, migrant/refugee community roles in UK modern slavery policy, and female labour exploitation in agricultural sectors. She has been funded by institutions including Comic Relief, the British Academy, and the ESRC. She is accepting PhD students focusing on critical slavery studies, migration, and gender.
Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals addressing poverty eradication, gender equality, and decent work. She has contributed to evaluations of child sexual exploitation policies, NGO services for asylum-seeking youth, and support systems for women in sex work.
