Alicia Heys serves as a Senior Lecturer in Modern Slavery at the Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation, University of Hull, where she conducts research on policy frameworks, victim agency, legal enforcement mechanisms, and the nexus between armed conflict and human trafficking. Her work actively bridges academic scholarship with frontline practice through collaborations with law enforcement, NGOs, and government bodies.
Her research spans critical domains including modern slavery victim identification systems, supply chain labor exploitation, conflict-driven trafficking patterns, National Referral Mechanism efficacy, and organized crime networks. Notable contributions include an Oxford University Press monograph examining conflict-trafficking linkages and leadership in the AHRC-funded Modern Slavery and Human Rights Policy and Evidence Centre.

Heys chairs the Humber Modern Slavery Partnership and serves as Co-Investigator for the AHRC Modern Slavery Policy and Evidence Centre. Her grant-funded initiatives include the Humberside PCC Award project addressing victim care pathways and the 'Identifying Pathways to Support British Victims' scoping study.
Affiliated with the Centre for Violence, Victimology and Vulnerability (CV3) and Cultures of Incarceration Centre, she leads practitioner workshops through the Modern Slavery Partnerships program and advises UNICEF on Ukrainian child trafficking risks.
