Lorelei Corcoran is a Professor of Art History in the Department of Art and Design at the University of Memphis and a member of the Institute of Egyptian Art & Archaeology, a Center of Excellence. She advises MA and BA programs in Egyptian art and archaeology. Her research focuses on Egyptian funerary iconography, material culture, and the interplay of texts and images.
Education:
- B.A. in Classical Studies, Tufts University (1975)
- Ph.D. in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations (Egyptology concentration), University of Chicago (1988)
Research: Dr. Corcoran’s work explores ancient Egyptian art, including pigment studies (e.g., the discovery of the earliest Egyptian blue pigment) and funerary practices. Her fieldwork includes roles in the University of Chicago’s Epigraphic Survey, the Great Hypostyle Hall Project, and excavations at ancient Memphis and Luxor.
Publications: Highlights include monographs on portrait mummies and articles on color symbolism in Egyptian art. Her work has been featured in museums like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and on National Geographic specials.
Professional Contributions: Former assistant curator at the Oriental Institute Museum and former curator of the IEAA’s Egyptian collection. Active in curatorial work and public engagement through lectures and media appearances.
