Professor Joann Fletcher is an Honorary Visiting Professor at the University of York’s Department of Archaeology, specializing in ancient Egyptian archaeology with a focus on body adornment, mummification, and global mummy studies. She holds a PhD from the University of Manchester (1996) and a first degree in Ancient History and Egyptology from University College London (1987).
Her research spans worldwide studies of human remains, including projects in Egypt, Yemen, Peru, Chile, and Ireland. As a founding member of York’s Mummy Research Group, she collaborates with institutions like Sana’a University and the National Museum of Ireland. She designed Egyptology curricula for UK educational bodies and contributed to major museum exhibitions, including Harrogate Museums and the BBC.
Research interests include funerary practices, ancient cosmetics, and the ceremonial jewelry of 18th dynasty pharaohs. Awards include the NMA Award (2006) for her multimedia project 'Death in Sakkara'. She teaches undergraduate courses on mummification and has advised on international projects like the Yemeni Mummy Project and Irish Bog Bodies Research.
Her work bridges academia and public engagement, with over 15 years of curatorial experience and frequent lectures at institutions worldwide, including the Smithsonian and the British Museum.
