Dr Huw Twiston Davies is a Lecturer in Egyptology at the University of Manchester's Department of Classics, Ancient History, Archaeology and Egyptology. He holds a PhD (2018) and MA (2012) from the University of Liverpool, with a BA in Egyptology (2010). His research focuses on the transmission of literary and religious texts in ancient Egypt through material philology, examining processes of copying and scribal practices in New Kingdom contexts. He previously served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Leiden University (2018–2021) and participated in the Leiden-Turin Saqqara excavation (2019–2022). He currently co-directs the MA Egyptology program and teaches courses on ancient Egyptian language, religion, and funerary beliefs. His editorial work includes serving on the Bulletin of the John Rylands Library's board.
Teaching responsibilities include MA-level courses on Middle Egyptian and ancient Egyptian religion, as well as undergraduate modules on hieroglyphs and mortuary practices. Research interests emphasize the interplay between textual content, physical manuscripts, and archaeological contexts, particularly in funerary texts like the Book of the Dead and Harpists' Songs. He has curated exhibitions at the Garstang Museum of Archaeology and contributed to digital preservation efforts of ancient Egyptian collections.
