Lone Sigbrand serves as a Senior Advisor at Aalborg University's Department of the Built Environment within the Faculty of Engineering and Science. Based in Copenhagen, Denmark, she actively contributes to the Universal Design Research Group, focusing on creating inclusive built environments that enhance quality of life for vulnerable populations, particularly elderly individuals with dementia.
Her research centers on evidence-based design methodologies for healthcare facilities, emphasizing spatial configurations that integrate natural elements like light and greenery to support cognitive and emotional well-being in dementia care. Sigbrand investigates how universal design principles can be operationalized in real-world settings to create supportive environments that address sensory, mobility, and psychological needs of aging populations.
Recent publications (2021-2022) reveal a concentrated focus on biophilic interventions in care facilities, with recurring themes of conservatory design, therapeutic landscapes, and the translation of research into practical building standards. Her work consistently bridges academic research and industry application, targeting measurable improvements in resident well-being through architectural innovation.
Sigbrand leads and participates in significant research initiatives including the LGR project (2021-2026) developing light-filled green spaces for dementia care, and the rumsans.dk platform (2018-2021) that delivers universal design resources to the construction industry. She actively engages with policymakers through consultancy projects like the Building Regulations course and accessibility safety initiatives.
Her professional activities extend to frequent conference presentations, media commentary on inclusive design practices, and public advocacy for dementia-friendly architecture. Sigbrand collaborates extensively with interdisciplinary teams across healthcare, architecture, and policy domains to advance universal design implementation in Danish building practices.
