Londa Schiebinger is the John L. Hinds Professor of History of Science in the History Department at Stanford University and Director of the EU/US Gendered Innovations in Science, Health & Medicine, Engineering, and Environment Project. She previously served as Director of Stanford's Clayman Institute for Gender Research from 2004-2010 and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Professor Schiebinger's research focuses on the gender and science puzzle across three interlocking areas: the history of women's participation in science; gender in the structure of scientific institutions; and the gendering of human knowledge. Her work in the eighteenth-century Atlantic World examines medical experimentation with enslaved populations and the circulation of knowledge, particularly in her books Secret Cures of Slaves and Plants and Empire.
Her recent publications and media features in Science, Nature, and Cell demonstrate how gender analysis improves scientific research, engineering, and AI development. Schiebinger has presented at the European Parliament, United Nations, and numerous international venues including the Gender Summits in Asia Pacific and Tokyo, addressing how inclusive analysis contributes to research and innovation.
