Gloria Whiting

Gloria Whiting is the E. Gordon Fox Assistant Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Her research focuses on early American history, particularly the intersections of race, slavery, gender, and family. She is currently completing her book Belonging: An Intimate History of Family and Slavery in Early New England, which examines enslaved individuals' family dynamics and methodological challenges in reconstructing their lives. Her work emphasizes archival innovation to humanize enslaved populations.

Education: Ph.D., M.A. (Harvard University), B.A. (Rice University). She teaches courses on American history, early America, and Atlantic World studies, including History 101, History 109, and History 600.

Research interests include: Atlantic World networks, digital history projects on enslaved people's spatial histories, and studies of runaway women in colonial contexts. She plans future projects on women in maroon colonies and gender dynamics in slave societies.

Awards include the 2020 Yao Teaching Award, multiple University Housing Honored Instructor Awards, and fellowships from the American Antiquarian Society and Harvard's Charles Warren Center. Her publications appear in the William and Mary Quarterly, Slavery & Abolition, and Journal of American History.

Whiting advises graduate student Isaac Lee and has been recognized for innovative teaching methods. Her work bridges historical methodology, gender studies, and the digital humanities.
