Lluís Gómez Pujol

Lluís Gómez Pujol is a Full Professor of External Geodynamics in the Department of Biology at the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), where he is also a member of the Earth Sciences Research Group (GEOKARST). He teaches in the Biology, Agri-Food Engineering and Rural Environment, and Marine Ecology Master’s programs, and serves as Coordinator of the Doctorate in Marine Ecology at UIB.

His research focuses on coastal geomorphology, biogeomorphology, coastal sedimentology, karst systems, and Quaternary studies, with particular emphasis on Mediterranean coastal environments. He has conducted extensive field and experimental research on rocky shore erosion, beach dynamics, and paleoenvironmental reconstruction.

His recent publications span topics such as shoreline response to sea-level rise, storm impacts, sediment transport, and remote sensing for coastal monitoring. These works reflect a strong interdisciplinary trend combining field observations, remote sensing, laboratory analysis, and environmental modeling.

Scientific awards and recognitions include:

• JAE-DOC Postdoctoral Contract (CSIC)
• Member of the International Advisory Editorial Board of Earth Surface Processes and Landforms (Wiley, since 2014)
• Co-Chair of the Rock Coast Working Research Group, International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG, since 2017)
• Scientific Committee Member of the 12th, 14th, and 16th International Coastal Symposium (CERF, USA)

He has directed two doctoral theses and numerous master’s and bachelor’s theses, primarily on coastal sedimentology and biogeomorphology. His research has been supported by long-term monitoring projects and collaborations with institutions such as IMEDEA (CSIC-UIB), SOCIB, and international universities including Oxford, Melbourne, and Ulster. He led the Beaches Division of the Balearic Coastal Observation and Prediction System (ICTS SOCIB) from 2011 to 2017.

He is actively involved in research through the GEOKARST R&D group and contributes to editorial and leadership roles in major international geomorphology forums.
