Liza Betts is a Researcher and Lecturer in Fashion Cultures and Histories at the London College of Fashion (LCF), part of the University of the Arts London. She holds a PhD from the University of the Arts London (2024) and specializes in costume design's role in representing social class, particularly in screen media. Her work bridges academic research and industry practices, focusing on how clothing communicates class identities and cultural politics. She teaches courses including Fashion Cultures and Histories, Critical Issues in Fashion Research, and oversees graduate research supervision.
Her research explores the intersection of costume, class, and gender through analyses of television dramas (e.g., The Street), football fashion, and literary adaptations. Key themes include the politics of representation, material culture’s societal impact, and the socio-cultural implications of ordinary clothing in screen narratives. She has presented at conferences such as the European Popular Culture Conference and published in journals like Film, Fashion and Consumption.
Betts is affiliated with the Performing Dress Lab at LCF and actively contributes to interdisciplinary discussions on dress as a cultural artifact. Her recent work examines intergenerational clothing practices and virtual resale platforms like Depop, highlighting how clothing mediates class and identity across generations.
