Liz Phillips

Liz Phillips is a Lecturer in Sculpture at the School of Art+Design, Purchase College. As a pioneering New York-based artist with over 35 years of experience, she creates interactive multimedia installations that merge sound, visual art, and emerging technologies.

Education

• BA, Bennington College (1973)

Her research explores the intersection of audio-visual environments and audience movement, using capacitance fields, C++ programming, and sensor technology to craft dynamic spatial experiences. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including the Whitney Museum, SFMOMA, and Ars Electronica.

Scientific Awards

• AWAW award recipient (2024)

Phillips co-founded the Parabola Arts Foundation (1981) and has collaborated with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Cleveland Orchestra, and IBM Japan. Her practice emphasizes audience participation as a core element of sculptural form and temporal composition.
