Liz Hamilton is an Associate Professor in Environmental Science at the University of Birmingham, affiliated with the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. Her research focuses on soil biogeochemistry, particularly the cycling of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in forest ecosystems under climate change, pollution, and land use pressures. She is committed to understanding soil resilience and developing nature-based solutions for environmental challenges.
Her research interests lie at the intersection of soil science, climate change, and ecosystem management. She investigates microbial nutrient cycling in both tropical and temperate forests, emphasizing responses to elevated CO2 and anthropogenic disturbances. Her work integrates field-based research with environmental monitoring and aims to inform sustainable land management practices.
Recent publications highlight her contributions to understanding soil respiration, nutrient dynamics, and forest productivity under elevated CO2, particularly through the BIFoR FACE experiment. Her research spans experimental forest ecology, greenhouse gas fluxes, and ecosystem restoration in coastal wetlands, demonstrating a strong focus on global change biogeochemistry.
She is a member of the British Society for Soil Science and the British Ecological Society, reflecting her active engagement in the scientific community.
Liz Hamilton is also the Programme Lead for Environmental Science, where she integrates practical fieldwork and inquiry-based learning into her teaching. She holds a PhD and MSc in Environmental Science from the University of Birmingham, a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice, and a BA in Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford, showcasing a multidisciplinary academic background.
