Dr. Liz Barnes is a Lecturer in the Department of History at the University of Reading, serving as Department Director of Teaching and Learning. She specializes in 19th-century US history with a focus on gendered state violence, Reconstruction-era dynamics, and the transatlantic slave trade. Her research interrogates intersections of race, gender, and power in historical contexts, particularly in post-emancipation Southern legal systems.

Her research interests span Civil War-era military justice, sexual violence in occupied territories, and the historical policing of Black women’s bodies during Reconstruction. She has published in Civil War History and American Nineteenth Century History, and her work has been recognized through prestigious awards including the BAAS Abraham Lincoln Research Award (2018).
