David C. Williard is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of St. Thomas, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. His work centers on the transformative impact of war on citizenship and contested identities in the United States, particularly during the Civil War and Reconstruction.
Key research areas include:
- Civil War and Reconstruction
- Veterans and post-war societies
- Violence in American history
- Law, politics, and historical memory
He is currently working on two projects: Confederate Legacy: The Problem of Soldierhood in the Post-Civil War South and One Part Against Another: George Washington, Memory, and the Limits of the Second American Revolution, which examines how Washington’s public memory shaped Civil War-era political culture. His publications include a chapter in Paul Quigley’s edited volume The Civil War and the Transformation of American Citizenship (LSU Press, 2018) and articles in the Journal of Southern History and Journal of the Civil War Era.

Teaching: Courses on modern U.S. history, Civil War era, military history, historical memory, and violence in American history. His Fall 2025 course HIST 292-W01: Topics - Reading Black Resist focuses on historical methodology and debates in U.S. history.
