Lisa Traynor is the Professor of Mathematics and the Class of 1897 Professor of Science at Bryn Mawr College, where she has taught since 1993. She specializes in symplectic and contact topology, focusing on the interplay between geometric structures and topological properties of manifolds. Her research explores the flexibility and rigidity of Lagrangian and Legendrian submanifolds, often using techniques like J-holomorphic curves and generating families.
Traynor earned her Ph.D. in Mathematics from SUNY Stony Brook in 1992 under Dusa McDuff’s supervision. She has held postdoctoral positions at institutions including MSRI and Stanford, and spent sabbaticals at MSRI, IAS, and AIM. She co-organizes the Math PACT and PATCH seminars, fostering collaboration in topology.
Her teaching spans calculus to graduate-level topology, with a flipped-classroom approach using Moodle. She has mentored 6 PhD students, 8 MA theses, and numerous undergraduate projects. Traynor is active in professional service, including leadership roles in the AWM and AMS, and initiatives to promote women in mathematics through programs like Women in Geometry and WiSCon.
Her research highlights include contributions to Lagrangian cobordisms, symplectic packings, and Legendrian knots. While no explicit awards are listed, her work reflects sustained impact in geometric topology. She collaborates widely and maintains an active research program, balancing academic leadership with outreach and pedagogical innovation.
