James Michael Hughes is an Assistant Research Professor of Mathematics at Duke University, affiliated with the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. He earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of California, Davis in 2023, under the supervision of Roger Casals. His primary research focuses on low-dimensional contact and symplectic topology, particularly invariants of Legendrian knots and their exact Lagrangian fillings, cluster theory, and constructions of Legendrian surfaces. Recent publications explore topics like Legendrian doubles, cluster modular groups, and weave-realizability. He actively contributes to academic presentations and serves on Duke's Math DEI Team.
- Education: Ph.D. in Mathematics, University of California, Davis (2023)
- Professional Activities: Presented at institutions including University of Georgia, Louisiana State University, and Canadian Mathematics Society conferences.
Research Interests: Contact/Symplectic Topology, Knot Theory, Cluster Algebras. His work integrates geometric and algebraic approaches to study topological structures and their invariants.
Publications highlight advancements in Legendrian knot theory and cluster theory applications, with a focus on geometric constructions and algebraic frameworks. His service includes committee work to enhance diversity and inclusion in mathematics at Duke.
