Lisa Tauxe is a Distinguished Professor of Geophysics in the Geosciences Research Division at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. She serves as Department Chair and Deputy Director for Education at Scripps.
Her research focuses on the behavior of the ancient geomagnetic field, statistical analysis of paleomagnetic data, and applications of paleomagnetic data to geological problems. Key research questions include: How long has the geomagnetic field been essentially dipolar? Why does the magnetic field reverse? How strong can the magnetic field get? How fast can it change?
Dr. Tauxe's work encompasses paleomagnetism, rock magnetism, magnetostratigraphy, paleointensity, archaeomagnetism, and studies of the ancient geomagnetic field. Her publications include the widely used 'Essentials of Paleomagnetism' textbook in its fifth web edition.
She has received numerous prestigious awards including the George P. Woolard Award (2003), Franklin Medal (2014), Arthur L. Day Medal (2014), and election to both the National Academy of Sciences (2015) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2016).
Dr. Tauxe teaches courses including SIO 247: Rock & Paleomagnetism and SIO 113: Python Programming for Earth Science Students. She maintains the Paleomagnetics Lab and developed the PmagPy software package for paleomagnetic analysis.
