Lisa Sylvester serves as Chair of Vocal Arts & Opera and Professor of Practice at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music, teaching diction, vocal repertoire, and collaborative piano. She also holds faculty coaching positions at OperaViva!—a summer training program for young singers in Verona, Italy—and maintains active collaborations with Long Beach Opera as assistant conductor and orchestral pianist for productions by composers including John Adams, Philip Glass, and Osvaldo Golijov.
Her professional focus centers on vocal arts and opera performance practices, with specialized expertise in collaborative piano techniques, multilingual diction for singers, and contemporary vocal repertoire development. Sylvester actively champions new music creation through conducting scenes for emerging operas and premiering works by composers such as Julia Adolphe, Derrick Skye, and Juhi Bansal within the Prima Voce Emerging Artist Series.
Notable contributions include serving as music director for Long Beach Opera's Educational Outreach production of The Diary of Anne Frank, assistant conducting world premieres like Caliban Dreams and Daughter of the Red Tsar, and presenting at major industry conferences including the National Opera Association and National Association of Teachers of Singing. She remains a sought-after recital collaborator and creative team member for new vocal works.
