Lisa R. Wilken is an Associate Professor in the Carl and Melinda Helwig Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at Kansas State University (KSU), part of the College of Engineering. She holds a B.S. (2003) and Ph.D. (2009) in Biological and Agricultural Engineering from KSU and Texas A&M University, respectively. Her research focuses on bioseparations and bioprocessing, particularly developing scalable, environmentally friendly methods for recovering biomolecules from algae and other biological sources. She leads the Bioseparations and Bioprocessing Laboratory, addressing challenges in cell lysis and lipid/protein recovery for biofuel and bioproduct applications.
Wilken has been recognized with over 16 awards, including the 2016 ASABE Young Educator Award and multiple teaching and mentoring accolades. She has contributed to curriculum development, including the Biological Systems Engineering (BSE) program and courses like Bioseparations Engineering. Professionally, she has held leadership roles in ASABE (Biological Engineering Division Chair, Program Chair) and the Institute of Biological Engineering (IBE), including organizing the IBE Bioethics Competition.
Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary innovation, blending experimental design, process simulation, and high-throughput screening to advance bioprocessing technologies. She actively mentors undergraduate researchers and has driven initiatives to integrate advanced biological sciences into engineering education at KSU.
