Lisa Porter is a Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and serves as the Associate Dean for Faculty and Graduate Affairs in the College of Engineering. Her work spans semiconductor research, outreach initiatives, and academic leadership.
- Education: Ph.D. (1994) and B.S. (1989) in Materials Science and Engineering from N.C. State University and Cornell University, respectively.
Porter’s research focuses on wide band gap semiconductors, particularly gallium oxide, with emphasis on phase stability, contact engineering, and energy-efficient device applications. Her work addresses challenges in thermal conductivity, dielectric responses, and defect dynamics for power electronics and photodetectors.
Recent publications highlight advancements in gallium oxide polymorphs, contact metallization, and phase transformations under thermal stress. These studies leverage in situ microscopy and computational modeling to optimize semiconductor performance.
- Scientific Awards: AVS Fellow (2021), Philbrook Prize (2012), NSF Career Award (1999-2004), National Swedish Foundation Visiting Professorship (2000-2002).
