Lisa Paulsen is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Theater Studies department at Emory University, where she has been since 2001. She specializes in acting instruction and co-teaching playwriting in collaboration with the Creative Writing faculty. As Director of the Playwriting Center of Theater Emory, she oversees initiatives like the biennial play development lab, Brave New Works.
Her professional career includes extensive work in Shakespeare festivals across multiple states, directing plays such as How I Learned to Drive and The Road to Mecca, and performing roles like Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion. She has also directed productions for Theater Emory, including Midsummer Night's Dream and This Property is Condemned. Her film credits include roles in Psychopathia Sexualis and Happy Crying Nursing Home.
Paulsen holds an MFA in Acting from Southern Methodist University and a BA from the University of Northern Iowa. She previously served as Artistic Associate and Education Director at the California Shakespeare Festival and taught acting at the University of Alabama.
Her expertise spans actor training, directing methodologies, and Shakespearean performance, with a focus on integrating pedagogy with professional theater practice.
