Lisa K. Neuman is an Associate Professor of Anthropology and Native American Studies at the University of Maine, joining the faculty in Fall 2003. Her work bridges Native American studies with contemporary anthropological theories, focusing on dynamic cultural and identity production.
- Education: Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology (Duke University, 2002), M.A. in Cultural Anthropology (Duke), B.A. in Anthropology (Pomona College)
Her research explores:
- Historical trajectories of Native American diaspora in the U.S.
- 20th-century American Indian education systems
- Interactions between urban Indigenous populations and tribal communities
- Contemporary politics of Indianness
Prior to joining UMaine, she taught at Duke University, North Carolina State University, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, and Avila College. Her methodological approach combines archival research, oral histories, and ethnographic fieldwork.
