Lisa McGirr serves as the Harmsworth Visiting Professor of American History in the Department of History at Harvard University's Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Her scholarly work centers on 20th century U.S. history, bridging social and political history with emphasis on collective action, state building, reform movements, and politics.
McGirr's research investigates grassroots political mobilization and institutional development, notably through her award-winning book Suburban Warriors: The Origins of the New American Right which analyzes post-WWII conservative movements, and The War on Alcohol: Prohibition and the Rise of the American State (2016) which reveals Prohibition's role in federal state expansion. She is currently researching rightwing politics and social movements across 20th century America, demonstrating consistent focus on power dynamics between citizen activism and governmental institutions.
Her scholarly impact includes receiving unspecified awards for Suburban Warriors and co-authoring the influential textbook Give Me Liberty: An American History with Eric Foner and Kathleen DuVal, widely adopted in undergraduate curricula.
