Lisa Hochtritt

Dr. Lisa Hochtritt serves as the Director of the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) program at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). With over 14 years of experience as a full-time college professor, she specializes in art education and social justice, advocating for the transformative role of the arts in fostering innovation and societal change. Her career includes roles at institutions such as the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), the University of Arizona (where she was tenured and department chair), and now MICA.

Education:

• B.S. in Radio, Television, and Film, University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh
• M.A. in Creative Arts Education, San Francisco State University
• Ed.D. in Art and Art Education, Teachers College, Columbia University

Research Interests: Hochtritt’s work focuses on integrating social justice principles into art education, emphasizing the arts’ potential to empower youth and communities. Her collaborative anthology Art and Social Justice Education: Culture as Commons (Routledge) explores how art can drive cultural and societal transformation. She is currently co-editing a new anthology on making, crafting, and cultural change.
