Lisa Gail Collins is a Professor of Art on the Sarah Gibson Blanding Chair at Vassar College and Director of the American Studies Program. She has been affiliated with Vassar since 1998 and holds additional roles, including the Peter P. and Margaret A. D’Angelo Endowed Chair in the Humanities at St. John’s University (Spring 2022). Her work bridges interdisciplinary humanities, focusing on U.S. art, social, and cultural history with an emphasis on Black lives, visual culture, activism, and social justice.
Education: BA in Art History from Dartmouth College; PhD in American Studies (with minors in African Diaspora Studies and Feminist Studies) from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
Her research explores art as social practice, communities of care, and creativity, particularly through quilt studies and narratives of loss and resilience. Her 2023 book *Stitching Love and Loss: A Gee’s Bend Quilt* won prestigious awards including the Horowitz Prize and James A. Porter/David C. Driskell Awards. Grants and fellowships include the Getty Fellowship and a CASVA residency at the National Gallery of Art.
She actively engages with interdisciplinary programs such as Africana Studies, Women’s and Queer Studies, and fosters collaborations across institutions like St. John’s University and the National Gallery of Art.
