Lisa Cody is a Professor of History at Claremont McKenna College, specializing in European cultural and social history. She holds dual fellowships with the Royal Historical Society (FRHistS) and the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA). Her research focuses on 18th-century Britain, gender, reproduction, and legal history, with notable works including Birthing the Nation and an upcoming book Sex and Sensibility. Professor Cody has served as vice president of the Pacific Coast Conference on British Studies and contributed to California’s judicial evaluation processes. She earned her A.B. from Harvard University and M.A./Ph.D. from UC Berkeley.
Her research interests span legal and medical histories, gender studies, and visual/ literary culture. Major publications include groundbreaking articles on marital rape, Poor Law reforms, and 18th-century childbirth practices, which have received prestigious awards such as the James Clifford Prize. She also engages in editorial roles and scholarly advocacy, reflecting her commitment to advancing historical scholarship.
Her teaching covers British and European history from 1500–1945, with specialized courses on Jane Austen’s Britain, Enlightenment thought, and gender in pre-modern Europe. Recent work explores demographic narratives and the intersection of science with cultural practices, as seen in her contributions to Histories of Science: Natural Philosophy in the Eighteenth-Century Atlantic World (2025).
