Lisa Birke is a Lecturer at the Continuing Studies program of Emily Carr University of Art + Design, a Vancouver-based artist working across painting, installation, and performance art. She graduated with a BFA in 1999 and has since exhibited in solo shows across Canada, the US, and the Netherlands. Her practice critiques consumerism, human-environmental impact, and technology's role in identity through black humor and eclectic pop culture references.
Her research interests intersect contemporary visual arts, installation practices, and the sociocultural implications of technology. She has explored themes like Fractured Romanticism (2012), Semiotics of the {Postfeminist} Kitchen (2014), and TrippingTime (2023-24). As an educator with over a decade of experience, she frequently lectures on her creative process and artistic travels.
Lisa's collaborative projects include the 2009 Grace Gallery mural Stone Soup: Blind Leading the Blind (with Weakhand and Christian Nicolay) addressing recession-era art practices. Her work spans decades, reflecting evolving dialogues around media, consumerism, and biological manipulation.
