Dr. Lisa Akison is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Queensland, with over 30 years of experience in rodent models. Her research focuses on reproductive biology (2005–present) and developmental origins of health and disease (2015–present), particularly the long-term effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on embryonic, fetal, and adult offspring health, emphasizing placental mediation. She teaches endocrinology, physiology, histology, and systematic review methodology to third-year biomedical science students and leads the Biomedical Education Research Group.
- Education: PhD in Medicine (2013, University of Adelaide), MSc in Science (2001, University of Sydney), BSc (University of Sydney)
Her research spans Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD), epigenetics, and reproductive health, with systematic reviews analyzing prenatal alcohol's impact on neurodevelopment, immune function, and cardio-renal outcomes. Recent studies explore choline supplementation to mitigate ethanol-induced metabolic and placental disruptions and professional identity development in biomedical education. She has received grants from The Children's Hospital Foundation and UQ Early Career Researcher programs.
Scientific Awards:
- Choline intervention grant (2020-2021)
- UQ Early Career grant (2018)
She supervises PhD projects on diagnostic practices for FASD and professional identity in biomedical education and contributes to Biomedical Education Research Group initiatives.
