Professor Karen Moritz is a Professor and Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Queensland. She also serves as an affiliate of the Centre for Extracellular Vesicle Nanomedicine and previously directed the Child Health Research Centre (2016–present). Her research focuses on early life perturbations and their lifelong impacts on cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic diseases, particularly the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on developmental programming. Key projects include studies on periconceptional alcohol effects, placental biology, and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) diagnostics.
Education: PhD in Clinical Sciences from the University of Melbourne. She maintains strong teaching commitments, supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students in biomedical research and clinical practices.
Research Interests
Her work bridges preclinical and clinical domains, emphasizing sex-specific outcomes and placental roles in disease programming. Current projects address alcohol’s impact on offspring health, maternal cannabis effects, and renal/ cardiovascular development. She collaborates with institutions like Mater Health Services and Queensland Children’s Hospital.

Recent funding includes NHMRC grants for kidney development studies, FASD diagnostic services expansion, and genomic health initiatives. Past grants supported equipment acquisitions for microscopy and physiological analysis.
