Liora Israël is a Lecturer in Sociology at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS) in Paris, a position she has held since 2006, and served as Visiting Professor at CHDAJ during the 2017-2018 academic year. Her academic work centers on the dynamic relationship between legal frameworks and societal structures, with emphasis on historical and political dimensions of law.
Her research spans legal history, political mobilization of law, and law's role in elite formation. She investigates how social movements strategically deploy legal mechanisms, as seen in her analysis of judicial resistance during the Vichy regime and contemporary applications of law in political contexts. Her methodological approach integrates empirical socio-legal research with historical analysis to examine law as both a tool of power and resistance.
Dr. Israël's publications consistently explore law's dual function in maintaining social order and enabling transformative change. Her work bridges historical case studies with theoretical frameworks in socio-legal studies, revealing patterns in how legal systems interact with political movements across different eras.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Adam Podgórecki International Prize (2008)
She contributes extensively to academic discourse through editorial roles at the Canadian Journal of Law and Society (since 2009) and Droit et Société (since 2011), and participates in the Thematic Network “Sociology of Law and Justice” of the French Sociological Association and the Law and Society Association.
