Professor Linda Woodhead MBE FBA FRSE FAcSS is the F.D. Maurice Professor in Moral and Social Theology and Head of the Department of Theology & Religious Studies at King’s College London. Previously a Distinguished Professor at Lancaster University, she holds interdisciplinary expertise in theology, religious studies, and the social scientific study of religion. Her research focuses on secularization, post-Christian spirituality, religion’s role in contemporary society, and gender dynamics in religious practice. She has authored over 80 publications including Gen Z, Explained (2021) and The Spiritual Revolution (2005).
Education:
- Studied Theology and Religious Studies at Emmanuel College, Cambridge
- Early career at Ripon College Cuddesdon, Oxford
Research Interests: Religion’s decline in institutional forms, rise of alternative spiritualities, values as new 'religions,' and survivorship of sexual abuse in religious contexts. Her work bridges academic and public engagement through media collaborations and initiatives like the Westminster Faith Debates.
Awards: MBE (2015), Fellowships with British Academy, Royal Society of Edinburgh, and Academy of Social Sciences.
Grants & Projects: Lead investigator for AHRC-funded project on ‘Abuse in religious settings’ (2022–2024). Regular contributor to policy discussions on religion in education and public life.
