Linda Thomas is a Professor in the Department of Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT) at James Madison University (JMU). She currently serves as Dean of The Graduate School at JMU since 2021. Previously, she held leadership roles such as Academic Unit Head of the School of Integrated Sciences (2018–2021), Department Chair of Civil, Environmental & Ocean Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology (2017–2018), and Director of Construction Engineering programs at Stevens (2014–2016). Her academic journey includes roles at Georgia Institute of Technology, where she was an Associate Professor (2006–2010) and Assistant Professor (2000–2006).
Dr. Thomas holds a Ph.D. in Architecture and Building Construction from Georgia Tech, a J.D. from the University of Miami, and M.S. and B.S. degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Florida. Her scholarly interests focus on megaproject failure analysis and interdisciplinary approaches in higher education.
Her research explores project management challenges, legal aspects of construction, and urbanization impacts, often bridging engineering, law, and policy. Recent work emphasizes collaboration theory in managing unexpected events and strategic responses to cyclical markets. Earlier studies addressed facility management, mold litigation, and transportation infrastructure.
Dr. Thomas has been recognized with numerous awards, including Stevens Institute’s 'Faculty of the Year' and the Carol A. Kueker Visionary Award. She served on editorial boards and contributed to landmark publications like the Routledge Companion for Architecture Design and Practice. Her career spans academia, military service (U.S. Navy, 1984–1989), and legal practice, reflecting her interdisciplinary expertise.
