Dr. Lina Fadel is an Assistant Professor in Social Research Methods at Heriot-Watt University's School of Social Sciences. She joined as a Teaching Fellow in 2017 and transitioned to her current role in 2019. Her research focuses on migration, decolonial methodologies, and narratives of belonging, leveraging her background in languages and intercultural studies. She holds a PhD in Languages (Heriot-Watt University), an MSc in Translating and Conference Interpreting (Heriot-Watt), and degrees from Syrian universities. Fadel is affiliated with the Intercultural Research Centre, where she leads PGR activities, and serves on the School’s Postgraduate Research Committee. She supervises PhD and DBA projects in migration studies, cultural analysis, and anti-colonial methods.
Fadel advocates for inclusive academic practices through decolonial approaches, as seen in her 2023 article on fragmented identity and her upcoming 2026 Routledge book on equitable research methods. She has received awards including the 2022 Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas Certificate of Excellence and the 2021 Global Values Champion award. Beyond academia, she edits The Other Side of Hope literary magazine, amplifying underrepresented voices. She also contributes to public discourse through media engagements like a 2023 podcast on refugee narratives and a 2022 Conversation article on reclaiming migrant stories.
Her teaching roles include Programme Director for the PGCert in Social Research Methods and Acting Director of the MSc in Social and Behavioural Research Methods. She actively participates in conferences and workshops, such as the 2024 Debordering Futures conference at Cambridge, where she discussed anti-oppressive methodologies and creative narrative forms. Her work aligns with UN SDGs related to reducing inequalities and promoting peaceful societies.
