Lilla Balint is an Assistant Professor in the Department of German at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on postwar and contemporary German literature, culture, and critical thought, emphasizing post-1989 literary production.
Her work is transnational and comparative, exploring narrative forms from the novel to digital writing, literary theory, aesthetics and politics, and critical theory. She is affiliated with UC Berkeley's Townsend Center for the Humanities, Center for Jewish Studies, Institute for European Studies, and Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures.
- Current projects include the book manuscript "After 1989: History, Temporality, and the Contemporary"
- Co-editing a journal-length volume on Judith Schalansky (forthcoming 2024)
- Special issue on contemporary literature examining the "contemporary" as textual practice
Balint has organized literary events for institutions like LitQuake, Goethe Institute, and German Historical Institute. Her research has been supported by the Hellman Family Foundation, Humanities Research Fellowship, and Townsend Center for the Humanities.
