Dr. Liliana Lefticariu is a Professor in the Department of Geology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, College of Arts and Sciences. A broadly trained geochemist, her research spans biogeochemistry, economic geology, coal geochemistry, and planetary geochemistry with emphasis on stable isotopes and environmental applications.
- B.Sc. University of Bucharest (1989)
- M.S. Northern Illinois University (2001)
- Ph.D. Northern Illinois University (2004)
Her research focuses on:
- Sulfur isotope fractionation in sedimentary systems
- Trace element behavior in Illinois coal
- Mars sulfate mineral formation mechanisms
- Aqueous geochemistry of acid mine drainage
- Mercury isotope studies in coal deposits
- Low-temperature geochemical modeling
Supported by NSF-MRI 0821646 and ICCI grants, her work addresses both fundamental and applied questions in geochemistry. She actively involves undergraduate and graduate students in field and laboratory projects, emphasizing hands-on learning through the Geochemistry Group at SIU.
- NSF-MRI 0821646 for isotope ratio mass spectrometer acquisition
- ICCI funding for coal trace element studies
Teaching responsibilities include GEOL 417 Isotope Geochemistry, GEOL 517 Advanced Topics in Geochemistry, and planetary science courses. She maintains the Aqueous Geochemistry and Stable Isotope Mass Spectrometry Group facilities at SIU.
