Janet Dewey serves as a Senior Research Scientist and Director of the Geochemical Analytical Laboratory in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Wyoming, where she has taught applied analytical geochemistry courses for over 30 years. Her role bridges advanced instrumentation training and interdisciplinary research across energy, environmental, and planetary science domains.
Her academic credentials include:
- MS in Geology from Auburn University (1993), thesis: Structural, petrological and thermochronological studies of exotic terranes of the Ofoten-Troms region, North Norway
- BS in Geology from Mississippi State University (1990)
Dewey's research centers on watershed processes, water-rock interactions, and geochemical tracing with specialized focus on Rare Earth Elements (REE) and Critical Minerals (CM). She investigates mineral associations in coals, clay-rich siliceous deposits, and hydrothermally-altered granites, while examining water-rock dynamics in hydraulic fracturing and carbon capture scenarios. Her work frequently involves cross-disciplinary collaboration with engineering, botany, anthropology, and soil science researchers to develop geochemical solutions for complex environmental challenges.
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications (2015-2022) reveals consistent emphasis on energy-related geochemistry, particularly hydraulic fracturing impacts on reservoir rocks, trace element behavior in coal systems, and Mars-relevant perchlorate chemistry. Her methodological approach combines advanced analytical techniques like ICP-MS with field studies across Wyoming's Powder River Basin and subtropical watersheds, demonstrating strong integration of laboratory experimentation and real-world applications.
With three decades of teaching experience, Dewey trains students in ion chromatography, ICP-MS, and quality control procedures through courses including GEOL 2080 (Field Geology) and GEOL 5410 (Geochemical Analytical Methods). Her pedagogical philosophy emphasizes hands-on learning and data ownership, preparing students to develop research methods and interpret analytical results critically.
As laboratory director, she maintains instrumentation for water chemistry analysis including ion chromatography, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, thermogravimetric analysis, and surface area measurement systems. The facility supports both research collaborations and student training, serving as a hub for applied geochemical investigations across multiple disciplines.
