Lilah Shapiro is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of Human Development & Social Policy at Northwestern University's School of Education and Social Policy. She holds a PhD from the University of Chicago's Department of Comparative Human Development (2012), an AM in Human Development from the University of Chicago (2002), and a BA in English & Vocal Performance from Oberlin College (2001).
Her research focuses on identity, race/ethnicity, religion, and social class, with special attention to Jewish identity construction, diaspora experiences, and qualitative methods. She has published on topics such as American Jewish identity, ethnoreligious narratives, and assimilation dynamics. Her work has been supported by grants from the Alumnae of Northwestern and Undergraduate Research Assistant programs.
- Awards: 2015 Outstanding Instructor Award (SESP), Martin Marty Center Junior Fellowship (2011–2012), and Bernice Neugarten Prize Lectureship (2011–2012).
- Teaching: Courses include Religion & Identity, Race & Ethnicity, and Methods of Observing Human Behavior.
- Service: Faculty Fellow in Culture and Community Studies Residential College, member of SESP's Diversity & Inclusion Task Force.
Shapiro advises undergraduate theses on topics ranging from Black and White student responses to racism to family dynamics in religious communities. She has also mentored research on transnational adoption, homelessness in Chicago, and religious influences on human capital development.
