Liisa Karlsson is an Adjunct Professor and Senior University Lecturer at the Department of Education, University of Helsinki. She serves as a Principal Investigator and Supervisor for doctoral programs, including the Doctoral Programme in Cognition, Learning, Instruction and Communication, as well as the Doctoral Programme in School, Education, Society, and Culture. Her work is affiliated with the Research Group for Educational Psychology and the Teachers' Academy, which focuses on education, teaching, and teacher training.

Karlsson's research centers on educational psychology, child development, and the use of narrative and storytelling methods in education. She has pioneered the Storycrafting method, which empowers children to express their perspectives and well-being through creative storytelling. Her work spans early childhood education, special education, and the integration of arts and skills in communal learning.
Her recent publications highlight the application of storycrafting in healthcare, education, and cross-cultural contexts. Themes include child agency, trauma processing, digital archiving of narratives, and sociocultural influences on learning. These works often employ qualitative and participatory research frameworks.
