Dr. Liisa A.M. Galea is an Affiliate Professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and a Senior Scientist leading the Women’s Health Research Cluster at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). She holds the inaugural Treliving Family Chair in Women’s Mental Health. Previously, she was a full Professor in UBC’s Department of Psychology and a member of the Centre for Brain Health. Her research focuses on sex hormones’ influence on brain health and diseases like depression and Alzheimer’s, aiming to improve outcomes for both women and men.
Dr. Galea earned her PhD in 1994 from the University of Western Ontario. She has received numerous awards, including the Michael Smith Health Research BC C2 Award (2022) and the Killam Faculty Research Fellowship (2004). Her work spans neuropsychiatric disorders, postpartum depression, and the long-term impacts of reproductive experiences on brain health.
Her research has led to over 90 peer-reviewed articles, with key contributions in hormonal effects on neuroplasticity and resilience to stress. She actively mentors students and collaborates across institutions, emphasizing translational research to bridge basic science and clinical applications.
