Lieny Jeon is the Jane Batten Bicentennial Associate Professor at the University of Virginia’s School of Education and Human Development. She serves as Director of Early Childhood Initiatives at the Baltimore Education Research Consortium, leading the Early Childhood Data Collaborative, a partnership with Baltimore City’s early childhood programs. She also directs the Well-being for Early Learning Lab (WELLab), which focuses on early care education, educator well-being, and equity in educational access. Additionally, she is an associate editor for Early Education and Development.
Her research emphasizes early childhood education’s role in mitigating the effects of family and neighborhood disadvantage, with a focus on educator well-being, workforce development, and systemic equity. Key projects include the Well-being First program, designed to support Head Start teachers’ resilience, and collaborations with community organizations to translate research into actionable policies.
Jeon’s work bridges academic inquiry and practice, addressing teacher stress, classroom environments, and policies that impact children’s development. Her studies often highlight cross-cultural comparisons, such as analyses of South Korean early childhood educators’ work conditions. She has also explored pandemic-related challenges in early education and international student welfare during crises.
Education: Ph.D. in Education Leadership, Foundations & Policy from The Ohio State University; VEST Fellowships recipient. Her academic contributions span over 50 peer-reviewed articles, emphasizing teacher well-being, classroom quality, and policies shaping early childhood systems.
