Allison Atteberry is an Associate Professor of Education & Public Policy at the University of Virginia's School of Education and Human Development and Director of EdPolicyWorks. Her research focuses on evidence-based education policy interventions to address inequities for historically underserved students through rigorous causal analysis.
Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Education, Stanford University (2011)
- B.A. in Economics, University of Chicago (2005)
Atteberry specializes in teacher labor markets and causal inference methods including value-added modeling, randomized control trials, and hierarchical linear models. Her work examines teacher preparation, professional development, mentoring systems, and retention incentives in hard-to-staff schools. Core themes include dismantling structural barriers in education through policy design and implementation research, with particular attention to ethnoracial and socioeconomic disparities in educational opportunity.
Her recent publications (2018-2025) demonstrate a concentrated focus on early childhood education policy evaluation, particularly Maryland's ECSTRA teacher retention program, using mixed-methods approaches to assess implementation fidelity and causal impacts.
Key recognition:
- Virginia Education Science Training (VEST) Fellow
As EdPolicyWorks Director since August 2022, Atteberry leads a UVA-wide collaboration between the School of Education and Human Development and Frank Batten School that partners directly with state/district agencies. The center emphasizes actionable research on educational inequities while providing mentorship for students and junior faculty through grant-funded projects and policy outreach initiatives.
