Li-jung Lee serves as a Lecturer in Chinese Language within the Department of Asian Studies at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Arts. Currently on leave from February 2, 2025 to July 25, 2026, she teaches both non-heritage and heritage Chinese language courses.
Dr. Lee holds an M.A. in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language from National Taiwan Normal University and a B.A. in Chinese Literature from National Sun Yat-sen University. Before joining UBC, she taught Chinese at Wake Forest University in North Carolina and developed proficiency tests and learning materials for the Steering Committee for the test of Proficiency – Huayu in Taiwan.
Her research interests focus on Chinese language education, second language acquisition, and vocabulary development methodologies. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes making language learning both meaningful and enjoyable to help students overcome frustrations and become lifelong learners. She believes the ultimate satisfaction in teaching comes when students immerse themselves happily in Chinese and confidently share their ideas in the language.
Her recent publication, 'Fun in Learning Chinese Vocabulary: TOCFL Novice & Level 1,' demonstrates her commitment to developing practical, engaging language learning materials that incorporate daily life contexts with illustrations to enhance vocabulary acquisition.
