Lex Lu is an Associate Professor of History at Clark University, specializing in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Asian American histories. He has been at Clark since 2016 and holds a Ph.D. in History from Syracuse University (2016), alongside earlier degrees from East China Normal University. His research focuses on political legitimacy in Chinese history and the cultural history of aphrodisiacs in East Asia, intersecting with animal trade, environment, medicine, and fertility.

His first monograph, Appearance Politics: Legitimacy Building in Late Imperial and Modern China (2024), examines how physical appearance influenced political legitimacy in Chinese history. He has published on topics like the Yongzheng Emperor’s masculine ideals and Manchu court dynamics.
