Xing Hang is a Visiting Associate Professor of History at Brandeis University's Department of History. Their research focuses on Asian history, particularly the political and maritime networks of seventeenth-century China, and evolving Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. They hold a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and dual B.A. and B.B.A. degrees from the University of Georgia.
Research Interests
Dr. Hang explores the intersection of political legitimacy, maritime trade, and state-building in East Asia. Their first major project analyzed the Zheng organization's role in seventeenth-century Asian trade while navigating Ming/Qing imperial dynamics. Current work examines transnational Chinese communities in Southeast Asia across four centuries, emphasizing their institutional development and interactions with nationalism in modern China.
